Pyramid of Chichen Itza, Mexico

By Daniel Schwen – Own work

Chichen Itza is one of the most famous and well-preserved cities of the great Mayan civilization.

This archaeological site is very popular with global tourists who come to the Yucatan Peninsula for views of the beach and action-packed excursions. About 1.5 million people visit Chichen Itza every year.

However, the most iconic spot in the Mayan city, the Kukulkan pyramid, is no longer accessible to the public and entry is strictly prohibited.

The pyramid was closed in 2006 after the fatal fall of a tourist who rolled down the side of the attraction during the descent.
