Surtsey, Iceland

This small volcanic islet is part of the Vestmannaeyjar Archipelago and is located on the south coast of Iceland.

Surtsey is one of the youngest islands on our planet because it recently emerged – during the volcanic activity that lasted from 1963 to 1967. Access to the island is strictly prohibited, except for a small group of selected scientists.

The restriction was introduced to provide this site with the conditions necessary for the natural formation of its own ecosystem without external interference.
