Svalbard Global Seed Bank, Norway

By Dag Terje Filip Endresen

Set within a mountain on a remote island in the Svalbard archipelago, halfway between mainland Norway and the North Pole, the Global Seed Bank is a safe deposit box designed to preserve various plant seeds in the event of a food crisis regional or global.

The institution has the capacity to store 4.5 million seed samples, and now about a million have already been brought here.
